Trust Accounting & Practice Management

Financial integrity, enforced by design — not assumed through procedure.

Ligne is a closed-source, modular practice-management platform built around the financial and operational requirements of South African legal practice. Application Trust Accounting (ATA) is the platform's internal engineering name for the same product commercially supplied as Ligne.

“Can the firm demonstrate that client trust funds have never been mixed with business funds, and that every movement of money is fully traceable and immutable?”

What is it?
A professional legal practice-management and trust-accounting platform.
Who is it for?
South African law firms and legal practitioners.
Why is it different?
Trust accounting and financial controls are designed into the architecture, not layered on afterwards.
Where does data live?
On infrastructure controlled by the firm or its chosen hosting provider.
Can it be customised?
Yes — modular architecture supports additional modules, integrations and firm-specific functionality.
Is it open source?
No. Proprietary, closed-source software, commercially licensed by Bitts System / Ligne Financial Software.

Control design and assurance

Ligne is engineered so that the segregation of trust and business monies, the prevention of trust overdrafts, and the permanence of the financial record are enforced by the system itself — not by procedure or user discipline alone.

Trust account irregularities remain one of the principal reasons attorneys face disciplinary proceedings or are struck from the roll. Where a generic accounting system depends on users following procedure correctly, Ligne's primary controls are systemic — the constraint sits in the database and the posting engine, not solely in a checklist.
  • Structural segregation of trust and business funds at the database level
  • Prevention of trust overdrafts by database constraint, not by warning
  • Every financial event written simultaneously to the general ledger, the relevant matter ledger, and an immutable audit trail
  • Corrections effected only through reversing or adjusting entries — original history is never overwritten

Six architectural principles

01

Trust money cannot be compromised

A database constraint trigger rejects any posting that would overdraw a trust matter before it can be committed.

02

Every financial event is auditable

Transactions are recorded to the general ledger, the relevant matter ledger, and an immutable audit trail — together, so they cannot silently diverge.

03

Data belongs to the firm

The firm retains ownership of its database, documents, email archive and historical records — nothing depends on continued access to a vendor-hosted cloud platform.

04

Compliance is built into the workflow

Legal and accounting requirements are addressed at the point of transaction, rather than reconstructed as optional reports after the fact.

05

Designed for longevity

Built on mature technologies intended to remain maintainable for decades, keeping historical records accessible well beyond any single release cycle.

06

Modular extensibility

The financial core is separated from surrounding functionality, so new capabilities don't destabilise the ledger every installation depends on.

Systemic compliance controls

Ligne is designed around South African legal and financial regulation, with compliance controls built into the accounting engine wherever practical.

FrameworkArea addressed
Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014 Trust account separation, Section 86 trust accounting, interest handling, Fidelity Fund reporting
LPC Rules Trust creditors, reconciliations, auditor reporting, trust integrity requirements
Income Tax Act PAYE, UIF, SDL, ETI, IRP5, EMP201, EMP501
Companies Act Corporate client compliance and company secretarial tracking

The reference implementation targets South African legal practice, but the underlying trust-accounting principles — segregating client funds from business funds, preventing overdrafts before they're committed, and maintaining an immutable audit trail — mirror IOLTA rules across US state bars, Germany's Anderkonto regime, and equivalent fiduciary-accounting rules elsewhere. The ledger engine itself is jurisdiction-agnostic.

Platform capabilities

Financial operations

Trust accounting, business accounting, general ledger, matter and client trust ledgers, receipts, payments, trust transfers, VAT, fee notes, disbursements, trust interest, bank reconciliation and financial reporting.

Matter management

Each matter is a complete workspace — clients, related parties, correspondence, documents, financial history, notes, tasks, deadlines, evidence and email, all linked to its full operational history.

Practice administration

Client and matter management, document management, calendaring, shared diaries, workflow deadlines, email integration, full-text search, payroll, debt recovery and evidence management.

Practice-area modules

Bills of costs, conveyancing, CIPC/company secretarial compliance, and debtor/collections management — built on the core platform.

LPC reporting

Trust creditors list, trust bank reconciliation, trust integrity certificate, Section 86 trust reports, Section 78 investment/interest schedules, Fidelity Fund certificate register, annual trust auditor's reports.

SARS reporting

EMP201, EMP501, IRP5, IT3(a), PAYE, UIF, SDL, Employment Tax Incentive, medical tax credits.

Extend, don't fork

Ligne is not intended to be forked for every firm's requirements — it is intended to be extended. Its NetBeans Platform module architecture enforces this structurally:

  • Independent modules with controlled dependencies between them
  • Lookup-based service discovery rather than direct compile-time coupling
  • A core module can define an extension point without knowing which — or how many — other modules implement it
  • Shared services, database migrations and integration points give new modules a stable surface to build against

How the platform is composed

Core platform

Trust accounting, GL, matter accounting, client/matter management, document & email integration, workflow, compliance reporting, the immutable audit trail, security and database infrastructure.

Additional modules

Bank reconciliation, debt/collections, bills of costs, conveyancing, CIPC/company secretarial, payroll, evidence/dossier management.

Bespoke firm modules

Firm-specific workflows, custom reports, specialised billing models, document automation, AI-assisted functionality, banking and accounting integrations, custom import/export, third-party APIs.

Built on proven technology

Chosen for stability, maintainability and long-term support, rather than rapidly changing web development trends.

  • Java
  • NetBeans Platform
  • PostgreSQL
  • jOOQ
  • FlatLaf
  • Automated regression testing
  • Version-controlled database migrations
35 integrated application modules
31 version-controlled database migrations
100% of core changes validated by automated tests before release

Your data remains under your control

Ligne follows a desktop-first architecture — deployable on a single workstation, an office server, or privately managed or cloud infrastructure selected by the firm. A mandatory multi-tenant cloud service is deliberately avoided.

Continuity of audit evidence

Historical client and financial information remains available regardless of future commercial or support arrangements.

Independence from hosted platforms

The practice, and access to its records, continues operating during an internet outage or a vendor's service disruption.

Full possession of the record

The firm holds its own database and matter-linked email archive, rather than a vendor-mediated export.

POPIA & confidentiality

Sensitive client information is not routinely replicated across third-party hosted services.

Licensing

Ligne Practice Management Platform is proprietary, closed-source software. The source code repository is private, and access to it is controlled by the developer. Use, copying, modification, redistribution and access to the source code are subject to the applicable commercial licence and contractual terms agreed with Bitts System / Ligne Financial Software.

Why proprietary?

A controlled commercial platform, not an open-source project — this lets the development team maintain a consistent financial architecture, control changes to the accounting engine, provide supported releases, and develop firm-specific extensions without customers maintaining independent forks. The emphasis is on controlled quality, maintainability, accountability and extensibility.

Professional services

Implementation

Installation, configuration, database setup, migration of existing records, onboarding and user configuration.

Integration

Email, calendars, document systems, banking, external APIs and other third-party services a firm already relies on.

Bespoke development

Firm-specific modules, custom workflows, reports, dashboards, integrations and automation — delivered alongside the core platform, not by modifying it.

Ongoing development

Ligne is actively developed. Customer requirements can feed into the core roadmap, an optional module, or a private, firm-specific extension.

To provide South African legal practitioners with a transparent, auditable and professionally engineered trust accounting and practice management platform, where financial integrity is enforced by design rather than assumed through procedure.
